Monitoring and Enforcement

New Zealand has no formal mechanism to ensure that UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) accessibility rights are implemented and enforced. No explicit positive duty exists to make reasonable adjustments for PwD.

The government needs to develop clear and specific directions to organisations on what they must do to become fully accessible as employers and service providers.

Why the contribution is important

New Zealand law on accessibility needs to be comprehensive in its cover and effective enforcement of robust accessibility legislation is needed to ensure compliance.
